CALDWELL, Idaho — A 32-year-old man was arrested Sunday, Feb. 2, after allegedly using a ring embedded with a tomato soup barcode to scan higher-priced items at a significantly reduced cost at a local Walmart, police said.
According to the Caldwell Police Department, Dylan Rockwell was charged with felony burglary after allegedly stealing a $300 grill by scanning it as tomato soup at the store’s self-checkout.
Officers responded to the Walmart at 6 p.m. following reports of theft in progress. They later intercepted Rockwell at his residence, where he was detained without incident and recovered the merchandise.
During questioning, Rockwell admitted to wearing a ring with a tomato soup barcode specifically for scanning expensive items at a fraction of their actual price. He also confessed to committing several previous thefts from Walmart using the same method, police said.
