From Barbie to the Nancy Meyers’ coastal grandmother phenomenon, it’s safe to say that TikTok finds inspiration in some of the most unexpected places. But never did we think that’d we base an entire summer aesthetic off of a tomato. Lately, “Tomato Girl Summer” has been taking over TikTok, with the mere keyword alone conjuring up nearly 210 million views.

Make no mistake, TikTok isn’t telling you to dress up like a tomato or paint your home a vibrant red. The term “evokes an aesthetic of breezy strolls along the seaside and Amalfi Coast picnics replete with vibrant fruits and whimsical tablecloth prints,” explains Jennifer Weisberg, interior designer and owner of JLW Interiors. “This trend is having a moment that I feel is adjacent to the ‘summer of European travel’ craze: In a post-pandemic world, travel has been at the forefront of everyone’s mind.”

But while Tomato Girl Summer might be revered as a fashion trend—with everyone dressing up in silk scarves, billowy dresses, and the occasional pop of Italian red—it is possible to bring that sense of la dolce vita to your home decor, too (even if you don’t live in an Italianate villa). The trick, however, is to find the perfect balance between maximalism and rustic bohemian. “[It] as a whimsical and nostalgic undertone reminiscent of carefree summers and nostalgic memories,” explains designer Mina Lisanin. “[There’s]a sense of simplicity and joy to spaces, providing an escape from the complexities of everyday life.”

To start, Lisanin recommends having fun with your color palette, opting for bright blues, limoncello yellows, and fiery reds. “Experiment with patterns and textures that reflect the playful nature of the trend,” she adds. “Consider gingham or polka dot patterns, textured fabrics, or handmade ceramics with whimsical designs.” More might be more, but if you want to give your home a tinge of Italian living, weave in some rustic pieces such as a wooden accent table or a woven picnic basket. Or, just host a dinner al fresco, heavy on the pasta and Aperol spritzes. A tomato motif is not necessary, but if you want to lean into the aesthetic, cheeky bread and butter plates or herbaceous scented candle make the perfect finishing touch.
